ABOUT WASHINGTON CATHOLIC

A legacy of faith, learning,
and service.

For generations, Washington Catholic has helped students grow academically, spiritually, and personally within a caring Catholic community.

OUR STORY

Catholic education rooted in Washington

Catholic education in Washington began in 1837 when Father Simon Lalumiere recognized the need to strengthen faith through education in the growing community. The first classes were held in the basement of St. Simon Church.

On September 26, 1857, the Sisters of Providence arrived from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and laid the foundation for the Catholic school system that continues to serve Washington today.

Through the dedication of religious communities, lay educators, families, and parish leaders, Washington Catholic has grown while remaining committed to faith, academic excellence, and service.

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin recognized the potential of Catholic education in Washington because of the community’s growing Catholic population.

Under her leadership, the Sisters of Providence founded and operated the school that became St. Simon Academy. Her vision and the service of the Sisters helped establish the tradition of Catholic education that Washington Catholic continues today.
